Walt Disney forgot to renew their domain name clubpenguin.com! For my eight-year-old daughter who started her summer vacation - this is overwhelming news! She was the one that clicked on “news” after searching on Google to find out what was happening with her monthly subscription to her favorite online game Club Penguin!
If Walt Disney can overlook such an important issue as renewing a domain name, what about you? How are you keeping track of your domains?
PRACTICAL LESSONS TO BE LEARNED
- Many domain registrar’s have an option where you can pay an extra dollar or two and automatically renew all of your domain names on the same day. This will help when you have multiple domains to keep track of, especially if you are handling domains for someone else.
- Usually, you can renew your domain for more than one year. If you buy your domain for five or ten years this will allow you to rest easy. Also, it helps in Search Engine Optimization SEO because the robots tend to believe your website will be staying there.
- Add your domain renewal to your online calendar and set a reminder!
- Finally, make sure you are receiving your emails from your hosting company in your INBOX - not your JUNK EMAIL. This may sound obvious, however, hosting is becoming trickier. For example, I purchased ED.GY - that is the entire domain name. .GY is from Guyana and was not purchased easily. I have complicated documentation to make sure I know where I hosted it and I need to make sure I remember to how and when to renew or I could very well have a Disney Domain Mishap.
If Walt Disney can make such a critical error than any of us can.
